shades of brown & t-town!!

Shout out my tulsa people! Ya'll aren't lacking when it comes to good coffee. Shades of Brown is located on Peoria Street, is a TREAT, and is surrounded by the BEST shopping! I'm so excited to share more about this shop with you!

Tulsa Day Trip with Mom!

A few weeks ago I received an email from my agent notifying me I had booked my first commercial! Woo! I was so excited for this new opportunity as I've been expanding my experience in the film industry lately. The film studio where I would be shooting was in Tulsa, so I immediately thought about the coffee blog! Of course I had to check out a shop while I was in town! A few people had mentioned Shades of Brown, so I decided that would be the one. Needless to say- a huge success!

My mom offered to ride with me for some fun, quality time- she's the best! She even dropped me off at my shoot! The commercial went super well, and I had lots of fun! (It's going to air in Tulsa, so if you live there, be sure to look out for the new Osage Casino commercial!). After the shoot, we drove over to Brookside and grabbed some lunch at Torchy's- a fav, and did some early birthday shopping.

In case you aren't familiar with the Tulsa area, it is the perfect place for a fun day trip! There's amazing shopping (urban outfitters, free people, lululemon, to name a few) and great places to eat. Some of my favorites restaurants include Sushi Hana (also on Peoria St), and Andolinis (located on Cherry St). When covid isn't a thing, there are some great artists that come through there as well. Canes Ballroom is a popular concert venue and I've seen multiple artists there including Jon Bellion and the Pentatonix. And of course, the icing on the cake is the incredible coffee shops you must visit while you're there! Unfortunately, I only had time to visit one, but I'm excited to go back and try out more in the future (tulsa people, lmk where!).

Shades of Brown

Shades of Brown is a vintage-y, cozy, hipster shop located in the heart of Brookside. They have velvet couches, book shelves, plants, and it's just all around a good vibe. Along with fantastic coffee, they sell local art including handmade mugs by Mud Masters Pottery, colorful cards illustrated by Rose Phipps, and beautiful jewelry crafted by Dillon Rose.

They also have a variety of desserts and pastries for sale, including VEGAN CUPCAKES. So... I didn't get one because I was still full from the Torchy's earlier that day, but I will be back for more. They also had non-vegan pastry options that looked delicious. S.O.B. has a wide assortment of coffee syrups including your classics- caramel, vanilla bean, hazelnut, and lavender, but they also had options like ginger, pumpkin butternut spice, toasted coconut, white chocolate and more. I wasn't brave enough to branch out this time, but please lmk if you try pumpkin butternut spice because that actually sounds so good in a hot latte or something...

and now for my personal reviews!

1. the iced vanilla bean almond milk latte.

- this drink was extremely refreshing and not too sweet! The vanilla bean had a wonderful flavor and the espresso wasn't too strong. For me, I don't love extremely bitter coffee, so this drink was the perfect balance.

2. the "cereal milk" drink.

- so I only got to try one drink, but I wrote down some interesting options that I wanted to try! One of them was called "cereal milk". This drink looks amaazing and is made with steamed oat milk, prague chocolate ganache, hazelnut, and cinnamon. That sounds like the best dessert ever made into a delicious cup of coffee. If you go and try this drink PLS let me know because I'm so curious to hear your thoughts!

3. the clever drip pour-over.

-I saw this on the menu and had no idea what it meant, so I looked it up. Apparently, it's a simple, yet effective way to make manual coffee. It's considered an immersion-style brewer, meaning you can basically make the same coffee as a French Press, but without the murky layer of coffee grounds at the bottom of the cup- pretty "clever" I would say ;)

-I have never had coffee from a clever dripper before, but I am very intrigued and think it would be something worth giving a shot. I love french press coffee, so I have high expectations for this. Let me know if you are a clever dripper coffee fan or if you own one yourself! I would love to learn more about this.

Thanks all for jumping on here to read my review! I hope it was insightful and that you are all planning your day trips to Tulsa, stat! Or if you live there, head over to Shades of Brown and let me know your thoughts. Happy 'hunt'ing everybody and don't be a stranger in the comments! xoxo!
